If you average the comment I got from a teenager who called me an idiot and a not-so-complimentary "you're a walking encyclopedia!" from a thirty-something--am I badly mediocre?

Nope. Teenager's opinions are like Fox News, only those who are like them take them seriously, everyone else looks for a legit source.

Well, teenagers rarely pay any attention to me--even when I was a teenager--so the remark surprised me at the least.

Pfff. Teen opinions are fluffy. As for the walking encyclopedia comment, maybe that's jealousy. All knowledge can pay off. It has for me.
