TITLE: Avernus
GENRE: urban fantasy
PAGE COUNT: (unfinished)
SUMMARY: A detective must find the culprit who blew up a girl's school before he strikes again.

EXCERPT

INT. BASEMENT OF ST. ANNE'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

The sound of footsteps can be heard, boots echoing on stone. A door creaks open and floodlights spill onto the scene. A technician in latex gloves carefully dusts the scene while a stout balding detective stands nearby smoking a cigar. A younger woman enters the room dressed in a black trench coat and boots. She spots the chalk marks on the ground indicating three bodies, only two which were human.

KIT
This had better be good, Harrington. You pulled me off the Scarborough case.

HARRINGTON
(flicks the ash off his cigar)

JOHN THE TECHNICIAN
(turning to glare at Harrington)
Hey! No contaminating the crime scene, detective.

HARRINGTON
The whole place has been compromised as far as I know. And Blackwater, you're not off the Scarborough case. This is more of the same.

KIT
The same? I don't see how the murder of a hermit bibliophile has anything to do with a girl's school.

HARRINGTON
Well, there's more murders right here. Two girls, both ten. Sisters--Alys and Tasmine Carson. Killed by rogue demon.

KIT
I've heard of reckless teenagers attempting to call up demons on a dare...

HARRINGTON
No. You tell her.

JOHN THE TECHNICIAN
(sighing)
Do I have to do all the work?

KIT
Look on the bright side. Harrington probably knows almost less than I do.

HARRINGTON
If you weren't under their jurisdiction, that could be cause for a demotion.
